Layers and projects
Does Nimu change my original photo?
Never. Every edit lives on a layer inside a Nimu project: adjustments, filters, retouching, paint and type. Exporting writes a new picture. The photo in your library stays exactly as you shot it, and the project stays editable.
What kinds of layer are there?
Photo layers, colour fills, text, paint and retouch layers, which hold pixels or strokes, and Raw layers, which hold none: they apply the Raw panel to whatever is under them. Every layer has opacity, nine blend modes, a mask and its own smart filters.
Where are my projects kept?
Inside the app, on your device, and they reopen exactly as you left them. A project never leaves the device unless you export a picture from it.
Can I open or save PSD files?
Not yet. Projects use Nimu's own format, and every project exports to JPEG, or to PNG when you need transparency.
Do I need Nimu Cam as well?
No, Nimu edits any photo. Nimu Cam is its companion camera, also free: it shoots with manual controls and the same 28 looks live in the viewfinder, so pictures you take with it and finish in Nimu stay one series. See Nimu Cam.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes, on any iPad with iPadOS 17 or later. On a wide screen the layers and the tools move into a column beside the canvas, the way a desktop editor is laid out.
The Raw panel and masks
What is a Raw layer?
A layer with no pixels of its own that applies the Raw panel, light, colour, curve, mixer, grading, effects and optics, to everything under it. Turn on Clip to layer below and it changes one layer only. Give it a mask and it works only where you draw.
How do I adjust only part of a photo?
Select the photo, open Mask, and choose Adjust an area: Nimu adds a Raw layer clipped to the photo, ready for a linear gradient, a radial gradient or the brush. Drag on the photo, and the sliders below work only inside the shape. Add and Subtract combine several shapes in one mask.
Does Nimu open RAW files from my camera?
It opens the photos iOS can show you, including the processed version of a RAW file. The Raw panel works on that picture with the same sliders a raw developer uses; it does not demosaic the sensor data itself.
How does Lens Blur know what is near and far?
A Portrait mode photo carries a depth map, and Nimu uses it. For any other photo, the device finds the subject on its own chip and keeps it sharp. Nothing is sent anywhere to work it out.
Filters, retouching and painting
Can I change a filter after adding it?
Yes, at any time. Smart filters keep their settings: reopen one, move it up or down the stack, hide it, change its opacity and blend mode, or give it its own mask so it works only where you paint.
Is Liquify undoable?
Every stroke undoes on its own, Reconstruct brushes any part of the warp back to where it started, and Restore All removes it completely. Liquify is a smart filter, so the photo underneath is never changed.
Which retouching tools are there?
Spot Healing, which finds a clean patch by itself, the Healing Brush, which takes texture from a source and light from where you paint, and the Clone Stamp, which copies exactly. They paint on a retouch layer, so the retouch can be faded or removed later.
Does painting respond to Apple Pencil pressure?
Yes. Press harder and the brush, marker and airbrush draw a wider line, while the pencil draws a darker one. You can turn pressure off, and a finger always paints at full strength.
Nimu Pro
What does paying actually change?
Two things, both about the file you export: pictures export at full resolution instead of 1600 pixels on the long edge, and the small Nimu mark in the corner disappears. Every tool, every layer and every filter is free, with no trial and no countdown.
Is it a subscription?
No. It is one payment, kept for good, on your Apple Account. There are no ads and no other purchases.
I bought it, but another device shows it locked.
Open the PRO badge and tap Restore a previous purchase, signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with. If it still does not appear, write to us with the date of purchase and we will help.
What happens to pictures I already exported with the watermark?
They keep it, because the mark is part of the exported file. Your project is still there and still editable, so export it again after buying Pro for a clean copy.
Privacy
Do my photos go anywhere?
No. Every tool runs on your device's own chip. The app has no servers, no accounts and no analytics, and it works in airplane mode, which is the simplest way to prove nothing is being sent.
Why does it ask for access to my photos?
To add the pictures you export. Opening a photo goes through Apple's own picker, which hands the app only the pictures you choose and never the rest of your library.
Is the demo on the home page uploading my picture?
No. If you open a photo in that demo, it is read by your browser and adjusted on your own machine. It is never sent to a server, and nothing is stored.
